MTN South Africa has launched Pi, a standalone digital network operator running on MTN's infrastructure. Pi offers contract-free mobile and home 5G services managed entirely through an app or web platform, with no credit checks or call centres. Mobile plans start at R99/month for 5GB, with an introductory R1/month offer for the first three months. Home 5G packages range from 200GB at R399/month to 1TB at R699/month, competing directly with Rain and fibre providers. Key features include data rollover for up to 12 months, eSIM support, multi-line household accounts with discounts, and outright device purchases. MTN positions Pi as a 'digital network operator' rather than an MVNO, using an 'endorsed by MTN' brand architecture to compete with digital-first rivals like Melon Mobile while keeping the core MTN brand separate.
