Mozilla will introduce a free built-in VPN tier in Firefox 149, launching March 24, 2026. The feature routes browser traffic through a proxy to hide users' IP addresses and locations without requiring a separate download. Initially offering 50GB of monthly data, it will be available to users in the US, France, Germany, and the UK. Mozilla positions this as a privacy-respecting alternative to sketchy free VPN services, consistent with its data minimization principles. Firefox 149 also adds Split View, Tab Notes, and renames 'AI Window' to 'Smart Window'. Notably, the VPN only covers browser traffic, not full-device protection.
