A coalition of 19 digital rights organizations and technology providers, including Mozilla, EFF, Proton, Mullvad VPN, and ExpressVPN, have signed a joint statement urging UK policymakers to reconsider mandatory age verification laws and proposed VPN restrictions. The groups argue that existing age assurance technologies undermine user privacy and security, have already been hacked in UK deployments, and that broad age gates could force all users to verify their identity. Rather than restricting access, the coalition advocates holding tech platforms accountable for harmful content moderation practices, excessive data collection, and deceptive design. Similar legislation is also advancing in the United States at both state and federal levels.
