Mozilla has announced 'Thunderbolt', an open-source enterprise AI client built for organizational control and independence. Positioned as a 'sovereign AI client', it supports chat, search, and research workflows, connects to enterprise data, and allows organizations to choose from commercial, open-source, or local AI models. It integrates with deepset's Haystack platform, MCP servers, and Agent Client Protocol (ACP). Native apps are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, with self-hosted deployment, optional end-to-end encryption, and device-level access controls. The code is on GitHub under the MPL 2.0 license, with enterprise licensing also available. The author notes the name is problematic given the existing widespread use of 'Thunderbolt' as a hardware interface standard.
