I’ve only been there twice, but one of my favorite photography locations in Washington State is the Cedar Creek Grist Mill in Woodland, WA. It’s a historic water-powered grain mill next to one of the few covered bridges in Washington.
The last time I was there was early in the morning early last November, while leaves were dropping and salmon were jumping in the creek.
This time I caught them right at the end of a working day, so the lights were still on and water was flowing through the mill, not just over the falls. I also had a bit more time to set up, and some experience about what worked and what didn’t work from my last attempt. And, finally, I’ve upgraded my camera gear since November.

A photographer shares their experience shooting video at Cedar Creek Grist Mill in Washington, comparing results from a Panasonic GH6 to their new Blackmagic Pyxis 12k camera. The Pyxis delivers significantly better dynamic range and more reliable results despite having similar pixel sizes to the GH6. Shot at 8k 84 FPS and played back at 30 FPS for slow-motion effect, using a Zeiss Otus 28/1.4 lens. The author discusses their ongoing learning process with DaVinci Resolve for post-processing and color grading.
