Every team eventually faces the architecture dilemma: stick with a monolith or break into microservices. Think of a monolith is one big warehouse, microservices are many specialized shops
Monoliths are unified and self-contained applications. This systems tend to be bulky and update in one module needs to redeploy the whole application and if one component fails, the whole system fails. To address the issue of bulky system, Modular Monoliths came into place. This involves breaking the application into smaller modules that are seperate and can be independent within the monolith system.
Howerver monoliths are:

<li>Simple and easier to start.</li>
<li>Perform well in small and medium systems.</li>
<li>Easy to deploy and rollback.</li>

Microservices are small, independent services that enhance system modularity and scalability. Unlike monolithic architectures, microservices allow for isolated updates and independent scaling without the need to touch the whole code. Every microservice have a function they perform within the system. Unlike in monoliths, Microservice utilises APIs and Network calls for each communication within the application. At times one can shrink the serices to a point they become a nanoservice which perform a single task - this adds more overhead. With all that, microservices raise complexity and errors increase due to tightly reliant microservices and demands a strong understanding of devops.
Microservices promise to deliver:

<li>Scalarbility and Modularlisation</li>
<li>Collaboration</li>
<li>Fault isolation - if one service fail, it doesnt affect the other service</li>
</ol>
Takeaway: Monoliths win in simplicity and speed-to-market. Microservices win in scalability and resilience. Choose based on your MVP.
