Windows 11's Modern Standby sleep mode is a major cause of laptop battery drain. Unlike the older S3 sleep state that turned off the processor, Modern Standby keeps the CPU running for background tasks like syncing and updates. x86 processors have historically been less power-efficient than Arm chips for these lightweight background workloads, though Intel has been closing the gap with P-core/E-core designs and Lunar Lake. Arm-based Windows laptops, especially those with Snapdragon X series chips, handle standby much better. A practical workaround is simply shutting down the laptop instead of sleeping it.
