Tech YouTuber Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) announced the shutdown of Panels, his wallpaper app launched in September 2024. Despite ranking #1 on app stores at launch, the app struggled to monetize, reaching only 900,000 lifetime downloads and $95,000 in revenue. The subscription model ($50/year or $12/month) failed to overcome users' reluctance to pay for wallpapers. The app will shut down December 31, 2025, with refunds issued to annual subscribers and code open-sourced for other developers.
