MinIO's GitHub repository has been archived (twice), signaling a definitive move away from open source. The project entered maintenance mode in December 2025 after a series of steps: removing community edition UI features in May 2025, stopping Docker image and binary publishing in October 2025, and ultimately archiving the repo. Existing deployments still work but will receive no new features, compatibility updates, or security patches. MinIO's official alternative is its proprietary AIStor product. Three open source S3-compatible alternatives are highlighted: SeaweedFS (Go, Apache 2.0, production-ready, strong with billions of small files), Garage (Rust, AGPLv3, designed for geo-distributed deployments on modest hardware), and RustFS (Rust, Apache 2.0, claims 2.3x MinIO performance but still in alpha).
