Mojang has announced that Minecraft Java Edition will migrate its rendering backend from OpenGL to Vulkan as part of the upcoming Vibrant Visuals update. The switch aims to enable modern visual features and better performance while maintaining compatibility with macOS (via a translation layer since Apple uses Metal) and Linux. Vulkan support will roll out alongside OpenGL in development snapshots sometime in summer, with a toggle period before OpenGL is fully removed. Modders are advised to begin moving away from direct OpenGL usage and to leverage internal rendering APIs where possible. Players on very old GPUs lacking Vulkan support will eventually be unable to run the game, though Vulkan has been available since 2012-era hardware.
