Microsoft is internally debating whether to delay or abandon its 2030 hourly clean energy matching goal as its rapid AI data center expansion strains its ability to meet that target. Hourly matching is more rigorous than annual targets, requiring clean power supply to align with actual usage patterns in real time. Despite previously meeting its annual carbon-neutral goal and being seen as a tech leader on emissions, Microsoft is now partnering with Chevron and Engine No. 1 to build a large natural gas plant in West Texas. Dropping the hourly target could also weaken the company's public case for new data centers, which face growing community opposition over pollution, power prices, and water use.
