Microsoft Research teaches AI tools how to debug code

Microsoft Research has introduced debug-gym, an environment designed to train AI coding tools in debugging code. As AI-generated code increases, the need for efficient debugging grows. Debug-gym aims to equip AI with the ability to use interactive debugging tools, improving performance and productivity in software development. Initial experiments showed significant improvement in success rates when debugging tools were used, highlighting the potential of this research direction. Microsoft plans to fine-tune LLMs for interactive debugging and encourages community contribution through the open-sourcing of debug-gym.
