At KubeCon Europe 2026, Microsoft's Brendan Burns argues that AI infrastructure is in a chaotic phase similar to early containers, and that the solution isn't more tooling but a shared operational philosophy and common interfaces. Microsoft highlights several upstream contributions: Dynamic Resource Allocation (DRA) graduating to GA, the new AI Runway open source project providing a common Kubernetes API for inference workloads, Workload Aware Scheduling for Kubernetes 1.36 with KubeRay integration, and Cilium contributions including mTLS ztunnel support and cross-cluster networking.
