Microsoft revealed technical details about its next-generation console, Project Helix, at GDC Festival of Gaming 2026. Powered by a custom AMD-based SoC and co-designed for the next generation of DirectX, the console promises an order-of-magnitude increase in ray tracing performance, GPU-directed work graph execution to eliminate CPU bottlenecks, neural-assisted rendering, next-gen AMD FSR integration with ML-based upscaling and multi-frame generation, and deep texture compression leveraging neural techniques and Zstandard. Alpha developer kits are expected to ship starting in 2027.
