Microsoft Israel's Country General Manager Alon Haimovich has departed following an internal investigation into the Israeli office's work with Israel's Ministry of Defense. The probe found usage patterns allegedly violating Microsoft's terms of service and a lack of transparency toward global management. Microsoft Israel, previously under Dubai regional management, will now be managed by Microsoft France until a new country manager is appointed. The controversy stems from concerns that Israeli defense units were using Azure in ways that violated privacy principles, including potential mass surveillance, with servers on European soil creating legal and regulatory exposure. Unlike Google and Amazon — winners of Israel's Nimbus cloud tender — Microsoft never signed a special government agreement, making it more vulnerable to ethical and legal pressure. The departure comes as Microsoft and the Ministry of Defense prepare to renew their contract, though on a reduced scale as defense units have already migrated significant cloud infrastructure to Amazon and Google.
