Microsoft President Brad Smith has indicated the company is rethinking datacenter design in conflict-prone regions following Iranian drone strikes on cloud infrastructure in the UAE and Bahrain. Smith called for international rules protecting civilian infrastructure, including datacenters. Microsoft operates facilities in the UAE, Qatar, Israel, and plans to expand to Saudi Arabia — all within range of Iran. Iran has also threatened OpenAI's Stargate datacenters in the UAE. No Microsoft facilities have been damaged so far.
