Microsoft has killed the Remote Desktop app, and its replacement's name isn't great

Microsoft has officially deprecated the Remote Desktop app (RDP client), with its support ending on March 27, 2026. The replacement is called 'Windows App' — a name widely criticized for being too generic and hard to search. Windows App is available on macOS, iOS, Android, and in browsers, and includes features like split-screen virtual monitors in a browser window and improved macOS navigation patterns. Importantly, the built-in Remote Desktop Connection tool in Windows remains available, so users don't need to switch to Windows App to continue using remote desktop functionality.
