Microsoft has confirmed that Anthropic's Claude models will remain available to its enterprise and startup customers despite the Trump Administration's Department of Defense designating Anthropic as a supply chain risk. The designation came after Anthropic refused to grant the DoD unrestricted access to its AI for applications like mass surveillance and autonomous weapons. Microsoft's legal team concluded that Claude can continue to be offered through M365, GitHub, and Azure AI Foundry to all customers except the Department of Defense. Anthropic is challenging the supply chain risk designation in court, and its CEO Dario Amodei clarified the designation only applies to direct use within DoD contracts, not all customers who happen to have DoD contracts.
