<p>At Open Source Summit North America 2026, Microsoft announced Azure Linux 4.0 and the general availability of Azure Container Linux. The announcements are straightforward enough on the surface, but there’s an interesting detail buried in the GitHub repository that Microsoft’s blog post quietly skips over.</p>
<h2>Azure Linux 4.0 is built on Fedora</h2>
<p>The repository makes it clear: Azure Linux 4.0 uses Fedora as its upstream base. It pulls packages directly from Fedora’s repositories and applies targeted overlays via TOML configuration files on top of that foundation. Microsoft’s official announcement doesn’t mention Fedora once.</p>
<p>The omission isn’t hard to explain. Red Hat - which owns Fedora’s commercial downstream, RHEL - is simultaneously an Azure partner and a direct competitor. Loudly advertising “our Linux distro is built on Fedora” would make that relationship visibly awkward. So Microsoft just… doesn’t say it.</p>
<p>Technically, Azure Linux 4.0 ships with Python 3.12 and introduces a <code>pylock</code> sandboxing capability for isolated Python environments. It also expands beyond its original container-focused scope into broader server workloads, which is a meaningful shift.</p>
<h2>Azure Container Linux is now generally available</h2>
<p>Separately, Azure Container Linux hit general availability. It’s an immutable, container-optimized OS with no package manager - designed for containerized and regulated enterprise workloads where a reduced attack surface matters. The immutable design means the OS image doesn’t change at runtime, which simplifies security auditing considerably.</p>
<p>Over two-thirds of Azure customer cores now run Linux workloads. Linux underpins ChatGPT, GitHub, and Microsoft 365, so the investment here isn’t symbolic.</p>
<h2>The agentic AI infrastructure push</h2>
<p>Microsoft also used the summit to push its open agentic stack. The Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF) - apparently the fastest-growing Linux Foundation project right now - is meant to establish open standards for agent interoperability across vendors and frameworks. The practical components include a Microsoft Agent Framework SDK, an Agent Governance Toolkit, and integrations with Ray and NVIDIA Dynamo.</p>
<p>Microsoft also introduced an open-source Agent Sandbox Runtime built on Firecracker micro-VM technology, which provides isolated execution environments for AI agents. The Firecracker choice makes sense: it’s the same lightweight virtualization layer AWS uses for Lambda, and it’s well-suited for spinning up short-lived sandboxed workloads quickly.</p>
<p>On supply chain security, Microsoft reaffirmed support for OpenSSF, Alpha-Omega, and the GitHub Secure Open Source Fund, and noted three consecutive years as the largest public cloud contributor to CNCF projects.</p>
<p>The Fedora detail aside, the overall picture is a company that has genuinely committed to Linux infrastructure at scale - and is now trying to extend that credibility into the AI agent layer.</p>
