Microsoft terminated the Windows driver signing account of Mounir Idrassi, the developer behind VeraCrypt, without prior warning or explanation. This blocks all future Windows releases of the popular open-source encryption tool, since Windows drivers and the bootloader must be signed through Microsoft's program. Idrassi received only a vague rejection message citing unmet verification requirements, with no appeals process and only AI-generated support responses. WireGuard's creator Jason Donenfeld reports the same issue. The incident exposes how open-source projects can be critically disrupted by opaque decisions from large platform gatekeepers.
