MIT researchers have developed a safety check technique that can prove with 100 percent accuracy that a robot's trajectory will remain collision-free. The method uses sum-of-squares programming and can discriminate between trajectories that differ by only millimeters. It could be useful for robots in spaces crowded with objects and situations where robot collisions could cause injuries. The technique allows for quick mathematical verification of the safety check.
