Meta has agreed to allow rival AI chatbot providers to use the WhatsApp Business API in Europe for 12 months, responding to European Commission regulatory pressure. The access comes at a cost ranging from €0.0490 to €0.1323 per non-template message depending on country, which could be expensive given the volume of messages in typical AI conversations. The policy change follows investigations by the EU, Italy, and Brazil after Meta banned third-party general-purpose AI chatbots from WhatsApp in October 2025, while continuing to offer its own Meta AI on the platform. The European Commission stated it is still analyzing the impact of these changes on its ongoing antitrust investigation.
