Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has launched new AI-powered features across both platforms, specifically designed to enhance photo editing and sharing capabilities for users in the U.S. and Canada.
On Facebook, an opt-in feature has been introduced that analyzes photos stored in users’ camera rolls to suggest edits and create collages. Though these images are uploaded to Meta’s cloud for processing, the company assures users that unless they edit with AI tools or share the results, the uploaded media will not be used to train AI models. Importantly, this media will not be used for ad targeting, maintaining a focus on user privacy.
Similarly, Instagram has integrated AI-powered editing tools directly into its Stories feature. Users can now modify content by adding, removing, or editing elements via text prompts through the new Restyle menu. This integration allows for changes to be made to user images and videos, such as altering hair colors, backgrounds, or applying specific effects.
These updates come along with AI Terms of Service, which allow Meta to analyze uploaded media and facial features as part of the editing process. The measures are indicative of Meta’s broader initiative to innovate in the AI space, which also includes features like AI-generated comments and the Vibes video feed. This strategy has reportedly increased the daily active users of Meta’s AI applications from 775,000 to 2.7 million in just four weeks.
Users who wish to opt out can adjust their settings via Facebook’s Settings to disable the camera roll sharing suggestions if they prefer not to participate in these AI-enhanced features. Despite the privacy assurances, users are encouraged to review these terms and settings to align with their personal preferences.
