Meta's move of React to a Linux Foundation–backed entity raises questions about control, neutrality, and what makes open source governance transitions succeed.

Meta has formalized the transfer of React into the newly formed React Foundation under the Linux Foundation, but the transition is far from a clean break. Meta retains a supermajority on the foundation's corporate governance committee for the first two-and-a-half years, and the executive director is still a Meta employee. Members include Amazon, Microsoft, Huawei, Vercel, and others. Unlike Node.js, which forked before finding neutral governance, React's move is described as preventive rather than reactive. Experts note that true independence depends less on board composition and more on who employs the core maintainers — currently still mostly Meta. The Kubernetes precedent shows that contributor diversification can take years after joining a foundation, and React's community should watch for the same trajectory.
