<p>Meta has acquired Assured Robot Intelligence (ARI), a humanoid robotics startup, for an undisclosed sum. ARI’s co-founders — Lerrel Pinto, previously at NYU and co-founder of Fauna Robotics (acquired by Amazon last month), and Xiaolong Wang, formerly a researcher at Nvidia and UC San Diego — will both join Meta’s Superintelligence Labs.</p>
<p>ARI was building foundation models that let humanoid robots understand and adapt to human behaviors, along with whole-body control systems, self-learning AI, and a tactile sensor technology called e-Flesh.</p>

<p>Meta’s stated goal is to become something like the Android of humanoid robots — providing the intelligence layer, sensors, and software stack to manufacturers rather than building its own hardware. That puts Meta in the same tier as Google DeepMind, while vertically integrated players like Tesla and 1X build complete robots from the ground up.</p>
<p>The strategy is cheaper than Reality Labs-style hardware investment, but it depends on the humanoid market fragmenting into many manufacturers who need a shared AI platform, rather than consolidating around a few proprietary stacks.</p>

<p>There’s a broader bet embedded here: that training AI in the physical world is essential to reaching AGI. Humanoid robots are one of the more direct ways to do that at scale.
