Apple introduces ASAF (Apple Spatial Audio Format) and APAC (Apple Positional Audio Codec), new technologies for immersive audio. ASAF supports fifth-order Ambisonics with multiple objects and metadata-driven rendering that adapts acoustic cues in real-time based on listener position and orientation. APAC achieves 80:1 compression ratios while maintaining quality, compressing 81 Mbps payloads to 1 Mbps. The format addresses limitations of existing spatial audio formats by generating reflections, distance cues, and radiation patterns computationally during playback rather than baking them in. Production tools include Apple AAX plugins for Pro Tools and Blackmagic Fairlight in DaVinci Resolve Studio, both supporting up to seventh-order Ambisonics and hundreds of objects.
