And that’s the thing people miss when they ask:

<h2>Everyone Wants Clients. Few Want to Do What it Takes.</h2>
Spend enough time around other indie builders and one word keeps popping up: marketing.
Sometimes as a complaint.
Sometimes as a question.
Sometimes as an afterthought squeezed in after delivery.
You hear things like:

<li>“We should run ads.”</li>
<li>“I need to post more.”</li>
<li>“Let’s hire someone to help with LinkedIn.”</li>
</ul>
And the temptation is always the same:
Outsource the discomfort.
Shortcut the system.
Make marketing feel like a button instead of a brick wall you build, brick by brick.
But here’s the check-in question I always throw back:

“What’s your average ticket size? How long does your service take?”

Not to interrogate. To reframe.
Because marketing isn’t one-size-fits-all. If you’re selling $300 logos, your strategy shouldn’t mirror someone selling $30K consulting. And if your sales cycle is two days, you probably don’t need six months of nurture content.
But what everybody needs - regardless of price point - is consistency. And that means treating marketing as a recurring investment, not a reaction to dry months.

Here’s a baseline I use for service businesses:
Spend ~5% of your revenue on marketing.
Not profit. Revenue.
If you made $10K this month, $500 should go into visibility. Not because a guru said so, but because without it, your pipeline stays shallow - and your work gets invisible.
That 5% doesn’t need to be cash. It can be time, tools, partnerships, or positioning. But the number matters less than the habit.
The habit of reinvesting in being seen.

<h2>Marketing Needs to Be an Effort - With No Immediate Expectation</h2>
This is the part no one wants to hear:
Marketing needs to be an effort that’s done
with no immediate expectation.
It won’t pay you today. Or tomorrow. Maybe not next month either.
But it’s the only reason someone you’ve never met will say:

So:
Go write content.
Hire someone to design content.
Hire someone to write content for you.
Hire someone to make a content strategy.
See a theme there? Well - I can only lean on my own experience, which is content. So that’s what I’m preaching.
But it could be many other forms of marketing for you.

<li>Comfortable going to events? Then go and market yourself there.</li>
<li>Like dialing leads? Get to it then.</li>
<li>Have good social media presence? Use that to market your services.</li>
<li>Like to write? Then write about why people should give a damn about you.</li>

The format is flexible. The effort is not.

<h2>Your Marketing Doesn’t Have to Look Like Mine</h2>
Let’s kill the myth early: you don’t need to post daily or build in public.
You just need to do something that shows you exist, consistently, with intent.
What counts?

<li>A newsletter that runs monthly</li>
<li>A case study that’s actually detailed</li>
<li>A DM you send with no pitch attached</li>
<li>A podcast where your voice becomes the brand</li>
</ul>
If you’re freelancing or consulting, your marketing isn’t about reach. It’s about resonance. You don’t need 10,000 impressions. You need one person to say:

That’s the bar. Meet it however fits your energy.

Most solo operators overthink marketing before they even start.
They’ll brainstorm taglines, scroll AI tools, and rework their “ideal client persona” 12 times - all before writing a single post or showing a single face.
That’s comfort work. It feels strategic. But it’s fear in disguise.

So don’t optimize. Commit.
Set your 5%. Choose a channel. Show up like it matters.

People I wasn’t “targeting.”
People who just remembered me - because I kept showing up, months after they scrolled past the first post.
That’s what marketing is.

An effort with no deadline.
An investment in future trust.
So if your pipeline’s dry, stop refreshing your email.
Stop blaming the algorithm.
Stop waiting to “feel ready.”
Just start.
Because even if you’re not advertising, you’re always marketing.
The only question is: are you doing it on purpose?
