Chrome's Speculation Rules API enables near-instant page navigation by preloading and prerendering pages with just a few lines of HTML. The API supports prefetch (downloads HTML only) and prerender (fully renders pages in background) with configurable eagerness levels. While only supported in Chrome 121+, fallback JavaScript can provide similar functionality for Firefox and Safari using traditional prefetch/preload techniques with hover detection.

Does it also work for the Client-side rendering page?

SvelteKit kit has this feature for client side rendering.
In JS ecosystem this existed for many years it first started with turbo many many years back.
Native prefetch will only be helpful to ppl that load the page from server every time, those cases are pretty rare especially because JS rendering is so widespread.
So it will help only very old tech, or pages that disallow JS.
Is still a good addition I think bringing some features directly to browser level and outside of JS control can create a better UX in some narrow cases where JS is not available.

If the Speculation Rules API makes the browser prerender pages in the background, isn’t that kinda wasting bandwidth and server resources for pages the user might never even visit? How do you make sure it actually speeds things up for users without blowing up your hosting or CDN costs?
