A comprehensive benchmark comparing lossless compression methods for floating point images with multiple channels, commonly used in film and VFX workflows. OpenEXR with ZIP compression remains the recommended choice, while the upcoming HTJ2K compression offers slightly better ratios but worse performance. JPEG-XL shows poor performance despite good compression ratios, making it unsuitable for this use case. Surprisingly, mesh optimizer combined with zstd achieves the best balance of compression ratio and speed, outperforming all established image formats by significant margins.
