jQuery 4.0.0 is now available in beta with bug fixes, performance improvements, and breaking changes. It drops support for IE10 and older, uses ES modules, and switches to Rollup for packaging. Despite being considered uncool, jQuery has a significant market share and is bundled with WordPress, possibly ensuring its longevity.

Or more specifically: the idea that websites can be built with vanilla HTML, CSS, and optional JS. jQuery embraces progressive enhancement and separation of concerns pattern, which is quite the opposite of how websites are built these days. Web development starts with 10+ React import statements for components, CSS, images, and whatnot. JavaScript is a must, not optional.
