A developer reflects on how relying on LLMs for coding tasks is gradually eroding their technical skills, drawing a parallel to losing mental math ability after becoming dependent on calculators. They note that while LLMs handle routine coding, there are moments when manual intervention is needed and it 'doesn't feel good' — feeling less capable than before. The broader question raised is whether the cognitive energy saved by AI tools is being redirected productively or simply wasted on passive consumption like scrolling TikTok while Codex runs.

LLMs Make You Dumb

Letting you run an LLM while you enjoy brain formatting platforms like TikTok there’s no wonder you will lose brain matter! While the AI works you should study, evaluate and improve the code if you find weaknesses and flaws in the code.

LLMs in coding are gonna have profound psychological consequences: some of us are already living an existential crysis due to them .

But, is it even relevant trying to keep your skills anymore? as a developer, avoiding LLMs to keep your skills relevant feels like avoiding driving car to keep my horse carriage driving skills relevant

Here’s 🥪 for thought: We do not know the impact of using AI/LLMs on our minds and cognition, and its perfectly acceptable, perhaps even wise, to be apprehensive of using them too much.
There are those that saying to “use them as much as you can, or be left behind”, as if we are not running an active experiment on our ability to think for ourselves.
That is not a foregone conclusion, and the very opposite might end up happening; those that leaned too heavily into them end up falling behind in the long run and those that moderate their usage end up improving their skills while retaining their mental acuity, much like the Tortoise ends up overtaking the Hare in the end not by velocity but because his competition became too focused on speed and got distracted.
We didn’t understand the impact of Social Media before it was rolled out to the masses rapidly, and there’s been a lot of unintended side-effects that we weren’t aware of before it was integrated into our lives and society.
There is ALREADY ample evidence now that points to the cognitive impact and atrophy that results from relying on these models and outsourcing our thinking. The rapid integration of AI is very much an experiment with unknown consequences.

Oh no, I can’t believe using a chainsaw is eroding my ability to use a normal saw… And taking a flight is eroding my ability to withstand a multiple months travel by horse :(
