Linux Mint has confirmed its next major release, Linux Mint 23, will arrive in December 2026, marking a shift from the traditional twice-yearly release cycle to a longer development cycle. The extended timeline aims to give the team more time to fix bugs and improve the desktop. Key planned changes include switching to the LMDE installer (replacing Ubiquity) for better OEM, SecureBoot, and LVM/LUKS support, a new Cinnamon desktop version with Wayland lock screen support, and a base on Ubuntu 26.04 LTS. The release versioning scheme and codename are also under reconsideration, with a temporary codename 'alfa' in use for now.
