The Linux Cast

The video highlights an issue where the cursor size in Linux changes depending on what it is hovering over. This phenomenon occurs across different desktop environments and window managers, including Electron apps. The author is unsure about the root cause and seeks insights from the community on where to report this bug.

Linux Has a Cursor Problem

I’ve been through this. It is usually the current selected cursor theme that is the problem. Cursor themes have a selection of scales sizes available and when am app requests a cursor based on it’s DPI settings, that cursor needs to be divisible by the actual cursor size.
For example, the app wants 90px but the cursor is 24px. 4x24 is 96. Sorry not close enough, so it uses the default 24px which is why you get a tiny cursor.
You’ll find useful information in the syslog. But generally the fix is to find a cursor theme that has a large selection of sizes and choosing one that scales well on your system. The default will work with no high-dpi scaling, but with high-dpi it is hit and miss based on your actual display resolution.
This is all just my observations based on my experience dealing with this issue, but I hope it gets you going in the right direction.
