The Realtek RTL8159 10GbE USB Ethernet chipset is getting mainline Linux kernel support in Linux 7.2, via an update to the r8152 Ethernet driver contributed by Birger Koblitz. The driver is based on Realtek's out-of-tree r8152 code. A firmware dependency exists for achieving full 10Gbit link speed — without it, only 5Gbit is possible — and the necessary firmware is expected to be submitted separately to linux-firmware.git. RTL8159-based USB adapters are already available at retail for under $100.
