Linux 7.1 overhauls T10 Protection Information (PI) handling by moving integrity generation and verification into the file-system layer rather than handling it transparently below the covers. Led by Christoph Hellwig, the change expands protection coverage and gives file-systems like XFS direct knowledge of integrity errors. The new implementation also improves read performance by approximately 15% for 4K I/O and reduces QD1 latency for small I/O sizes.
