Linux 7.1-rc1 is now available for public testing after the merge window closed. The headline feature is a complete four-year rewrite of the NTFS driver, promising faster and more secure file transfers between Windows and Linux partitions on dual-boot systems. The release also phases out support for the i486 processor (nearly 40 years old), removes some legacy networking hardware support, and drops unused SoC support to reduce maintenance burden. Testing proceeds through approximately seven release candidate rounds before final release.
