A fix is being merged into Linux 7.0 to address an idle power issue affecting AMD RDNA4 (GFX12) GPUs. After compute workloads such as Llama.cpp or ollama using the HIP backend, affected GPUs incorrectly report 100% utilization and high power consumption even when idle. The root cause is abnormal behavior in older MES firmware. The AMDGPU kernel driver patch adds a workaround by adjusting the MES over-subscription timer, covering users on older firmware while AMD prepares a new MES firmware release to fix the underlying issue. Additional SMU13/SMU14 fixes are also included in this week's AMDGPU pull.
