A historical performance comparison of EXT4 and XFS file systems across Linux kernel releases from 6.12 LTS through the upcoming 7.0. Testing was conducted on an AMD EPYC 9745 server with a Solidigm PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSD, using default mount options and Ubuntu Mainline Kernel PPA builds. The benchmark series covers roughly 18 months of kernel releases, with a separate Btrfs comparison still in progress.
