I had never heard of Torvalds before I started learning how to code last month.

He’s very recognized in the programming world, but other than that he’s a ghost.
Why do you think Torvalds isn’t as famous as Steve Jobs/Bill Gates?

Linus Torvalds is Underrated

However curious I am on your notes on him, I won’t be going on X to find out…

Jobs and Gates are CEOs of public facing companies. Torvalds is an engineer. It doesn’t matter how impactful your work is if you cannot sell it, you will go unrecognized. Do you know who Dennis Ritchie was? One could argue his work had more impact on our world than Jobs, Gates, and Torvalds combined but when he died it was overshadowed by Jobs’ death.
Moral of the story, if you become a billionaire people will know your name. ;)

The thing that best sums up what kind of person Linus is for me, is his contribution to a thread on the Linux dev forum. There was a heated debate whether to implement something into the kernel. I think it was some encryption standard for SSL, known to be buggy and susceptible to hacking attacks, something dodgy anyway. Devs were going back end forth on the need to implement versus the risks involved, and it got pretty personal.
Then Linus stepped in. And his first comment started with “Guys, this is not a dick measuring contest.”
