<h2>Markdown in Writer</h2>
<p>Writer can now open and save Markdown files natively, using the CommonMark spec as its base. In practice, this means you can convert a Word document to clean Markdown, or open a Markdown file and edit it with full word-processor tooling, without touching the command line or reaching for Pandoc.</p>
<p>For anyone who writes in Markdown and occasionally needs to hand off a <code>.docx</code>, or the reverse, this removes a genuinely annoying step. It’s not a replacement for dedicated Markdown editors, but it closes a gap that’s been there for a long time.</p>
<p>A few notes on scope: the implementation targets CommonMark, so don’t expect full support for GitHub Flavored Markdown extensions or MultiMarkdown-specific features out of the box. If your workflow depends on those variants, or on AsciiDoc or reStructuredText, you’ll still need external tools for the edge cases.</p>
<h2>Performance and compatibility</h2>
<p>Beyond Markdown, the release focuses on stability and interoperability. Complex documents load and render faster. Compatibility with Microsoft Office formats has been improved again, which matters for anyone who regularly exchanges files with people on Word or Excel. Open standards support has also been expanded.</p>
<h2>Everything else</h2>
<p>The UI has been refined in several places, and the release includes expanded open standards support alongside the bug fixes. Nothing revolutionary in the interface, but the cumulative effect of this kind of polish adds up.</p>
