Design leaders are failing to adapt to AI the same way they failed to adapt to mobile in 2008, but the stakes are higher now. Unlike mobile's spatial challenges, AI introduces behavioral complexity: non-deterministic outputs, tone drift, contextual adaptation, and emotional resonance. Current quality evaluation systems were built for deterministic software and are no longer sufficient. Leaders must get hands-on with AI tools, develop fluency in model capabilities, redefine what 'good' looks like for AI-powered experiences, and codify new standards their teams can follow. Proximity to the material is no longer optional for design leaders.
