MIT hosted a hands-on IAP workshop introducing Raman spectroscopy to students and staff from diverse backgrounds. Led by postdoc Lamyaa Almehmadi, participants used handheld laser devices to identify materials ranging from beach stones to cosmetics. A highlight was a robot dog from CSAIL fitted with a Raman sensor, demonstrating remote chemical analysis in hazardous environments. The workshop covered the technique's history, modern portable applications in law enforcement, gemology, and pharmaceuticals, and its potential for future research including unconventional magnetic materials.
