<p>Laravel 13 is out, and it follows the framework’s usual pattern: minimal breaking changes, a handful of genuinely useful additions, and a bumped minimum PHP version. This time that means PHP 8.3 or higher.</p>
<h2>PHP version and support timeline</h2>
<p>PHP 8.3 is now the floor. Laravel 11 also loses security fix support with this release, so if you’re still on 11, now’s a good time to plan a move. Laravel 13 itself gets bug fixes through Q3 2027 and security updates through Q1 2028.</p>
<h2>36 PHP attributes</h2>
<p>This is the headline feature. Laravel 13 adds 36 native PHP attributes as an optional alternative to traditional class properties. They cover a lot of ground:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Eloquent models</strong> - <code>fillable</code>, <code>hidden</code>, <code>guarded</code>, and related settings</li>
<li><strong>Queue jobs</strong> - <code>tries</code>, <code>timeout</code>, <code>backoff</code></li>
<li><strong>Artisan commands</strong> - command signatures</li>
<li><strong>Routing</strong> - middleware and controller authorization</li>
</ul>
<p>The new default <code>User</code> model in Laravel 13 starter kits uses these attributes out of the box. That said, traditional class properties still work fine - this is opt-in, not a replacement.</p>
<p>Some attributes existed before 13 (<code>ObservedBy</code>, <code>ScopedBy</code>, <code>UseFactory</code>), but the new release expands coverage to 15+ framework locations.</p>
<h2>Laravel AI SDK</h2>
<p>Laravel 13 ships a first-party AI SDK. It handles text generation, tool-calling agents, embeddings, and vector-store integrations. This was available in Laravel 12 but is now officially stable.</p>
<h2>JSON:API resources</h2>
<p>Native JSON:API resource support is also now stable in 13, having been introduced in 12. If you’re building APIs that need to conform to the JSON:API spec, this is now a first-class option rather than a third-party package.</p>
<h2>Semantic and vector search</h2>
<p>Laravel 13 adds semantic/vector search support with pgvector integration for PostgreSQL. Useful if you’re building search features on top of embeddings from the AI SDK.</p>
<h2>Queue routing and cache improvements</h2>
<p>Two smaller but handy additions:</p>

<li><code>Queue::route()</code> centralizes queue routing logic rather than scattering it across individual jobs</li>
<li><code>Cache::touch()</code> lets you extend a cache entry’s TTL without fetching the value first</li>
</ul>
<h2>Upgrade tooling</h2>
<p>The Laravel Boost installer now runs after npm commands for better package detection. There’s also an AI-assisted upgrade command in Boost that can handle version migrations - early impressions suggest it’s a credible alternative to Laravel Shift for straightforward upgrades.</p>
<h2>What’s still coming</h2>
<p>Teams and passkeys support in starter kits were mentioned but aren’t in this release yet.</p>

<p>Overall, Laravel 13 is a solid incremental release. The attributes system is the most interesting addition for day-to-day development, and the AI SDK stabilization makes it easier to build LLM-backed features without reaching for third-party packages.</p>
