Databricks launched Lakebase, a fully-managed serverless PostgreSQL database service built on technology from its recent Neon acquisition. Lakebase combines PostgreSQL's familiarity with modern serverless architecture and integrates with Databricks' lakehouse platform. Key features include copy-on-write branching for development workflows, separation of storage and compute for scalability, and integration with Unity Catalog. The service targets AI applications, with 80% of Neon databases already created by AI agents, and can serve as an online feature store for machine learning models.
