Microsoft Research's Project Silica has published a breakthrough in Nature, extending glass-based data storage from expensive fused silica to common borosilicate glass (the same material used in kitchen cookware). Key advances include a new phase voxel method requiring only a single laser pulse, pseudo-single-pulse birefringent writing, parallel multi-beam writing for higher speed, and a simplified reader using one camera instead of three or four. Machine learning is used for symbol decoding and encoding optimization. Accelerated aging tests suggest data can remain intact for at least 10,000 years. The research phase is now complete, with findings made public for others to build upon.
