<p>JetBrains has launched two new AI-focused developer tools: Air, an agentic development environment now in public preview, and Junie CLI, a standalone coding agent in beta.</p>
<h2>Air</h2>
<p>Air is built on the codebase of JetBrains’ previously abandoned Fleet IDE. The core idea is different from a traditional IDE: instead of centering the experience on a code editor, Air is designed around orchestrating AI agents. You can run multiple agents concurrently — OpenAI Codex, Anthropic Claude Agent, Google Gemini CLI, and JetBrains’ own Junie — within a single unified workspace.</p>
<p>When delegating tasks, you can give agents precise context by referencing specific lines, commits, classes, or methods rather than just describing things in natural language. Each agent session runs in isolation — locally, in Git worktrees, or in Docker containers — so agents don’t step on each other. There’s a single-task view with notifications when other sessions need attention.</p>
<p>The workspace bundles a terminal, Git client, code navigation, and built-in preview into one interface. Air uses the open Agent Client Protocol (ACP) for vendor-neutral communication between editors and agents, which means it’s not locked to JetBrains’ own tooling.</p>
<p>Air is currently free for macOS. Windows and Linux support is coming later. It’s available to JetBrains AI Pro or Ultimate subscribers, or you can bring your own API keys. Team collaboration features are planned but not yet available.</p>
<h2>Junie CLI</h2>
<p>Junie CLI is a standalone LLM-agnostic coding agent that runs in terminals, IDEs, and CI/CD pipelines. It supports models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and Grok via a bring-your-own-key model, with local model support (e.g., Ollama) planned but no ETA given.</p>
<p>The pitch is codebase intelligence: Junie is supposed to understand the structure of your project rather than just generating code blindly. JetBrains has coined the term “Shadow Tech Debt” for the low-quality, architecture-blind code that agents produce when they lack that structural understanding — and positions Junie as the answer to that problem.</p>
<p>Junie CLI also includes next-task prediction and one-click migration from other agents like Claude Code and Codex. It exposes MCP and supports custom agent configuration. Pricing starts at $10/month for individuals.</p>
<h2>The broader positioning</h2>
<p>JetBrains is framing Air and Junie not as competitors to individual agents like Claude Code or Codex, but as a neutral infrastructure layer underneath them. The Agent Client Protocol is open, and Air supports third-party agents out of the box. Whether that framing holds up as the agentic IDE market gets more crowded is an open question — but it’s a reasonable bet for a company that already has a large IntelliJ user base and 26 years of IDE experience to draw on.</p>

<p>No way to provide feedback quickly and easily…</p>
<p>UI sucks, doesn’t follow other JetBrains IDEs. Can’t move or swap the tab/menu bars (which are each on the wrong side of the screen).</p>
<p>Also doesn’t support any providers other than JetBrains, Google, Anthropic, and OpenAI. So users of GitHub Copilot, etc., are out of luck (at least at the moment).</p>
