Java: Pros and Cons to Consider Before You Dive In

This article is only scratching the surface (and maybe not even that). There were huge changes when it comes to development of Java language over the past few years, starting with Java 8 and now Java rapidly releases new versions of the language with many improvements (some smaller, some larger). Let’s list some of the things that were introduced since Java 8:

<li>local variable type interface</li>
<li>running source files without compiling them</li>
<li>addition of different garbage collectors</li>
<li>support for functional and reactive programming</li>
<li>various language features</li>
<li>internal improvements</li>

Not to mention various (stable, regularly maintained) libraries that cover many different needs as well as some very powerful frameworks and tools. For me, it’s really hard to imagine a proper backend application without taking Java into consideration. I honestly think that people who often bash on Java probably haven’t worked with Java a lot or had very limited experience with backend systems and the issues that backend engineers usually deal with. Even verbosity can be solved with certain libraries and IDE extensions - but I would argue that different people have different view of verbosity (and saving one or two lines of code here and there has never been something that I have considered a great accomplishment).

Java itself is a very boilerplate language with a lot of redundancies and the code becomes less and less readable over time. Java is considered a high-level language along with Python and Javascript, but I don’t see a specific need to learn Java. Javascript according to data is the most common language used by developers, and Python is in the top 3… And Applets have been practically driven out of use by HTML, CSS, and JS… So unless you’re taking AP Computer Science or something like that, I don’t see a tremendous need for Java knowledge.

Java is awesome. Applicable to any platform and situations. One of the most rich language in the world.
I only not recomendo Java for games, once there’s apropriate engines for this purpose, that provides much more productivity.

Java is very strong language. It can be used for various purpose. Everytime i do coding in java, I learn more about it.

Love Java. It has change quiet a lot though, since Java 6, which seems to be the concept that most Java haters have about it… we are now at Java 22! Sure it might be ‘boilerplate’ to some (although that has change dramatically), but it is like reading a book to me: Detail and informative. To me, takes a lot less to make a mistake in Java than in other languages. Plus it has improved dramatically performance wise. Also with Project Panama being introduced in Java 22, i see lots of improvement for managing high volumes of data as well. It also has a massive ecosystem with J2EE , Spring etc.
