Moving from the MERN stack to Java, the author feared that working with an 'outdated' language would limit their career prospects. Despite concerns about its dwindling popularity, Java provided stable and high-paying job opportunities that ultimately allowed the author to buy a house. This experience highlighted that mature, less-hyped technologies can still offer rewarding career paths and financial stability.

Java is dying and it paid off my mortgage

I used to hate Java because it felt very hard to understand. 
And these days, my mind has changed.
Even though I am not a successful developer yet, I want to share my thoughts. 
They might not work for everyone, but I hope they help someone.
Here are some areas I am working on to grow as developers:

<li>Stick to one type-safe/type-checked language that the industry is still using. 
I believe it can help us build reliable software for enterprises. 
(And I think Java is one of the good candidates 😆).</li>
<li>Learn Functional Programming in a pure FP language with a very strict compiler (I recommend Haskell 😉). 
I believe it sharpens our problem-solving skills and improves how we write code.</li>
<li>Study Architecture Design and Software Design. 
These skills help us see the big picture, make meaningful contributions, and have a bigger impact.</li>
<li>Develop strong soft skills, and deepen our knowledge in one or two business domains.</li>
</ol>

Java might not be the most bleeding edge language in the Java ecosystem, but the ecosystem itself is pretty awesome. Code in Kotlin, Clojure, Groovy or Scala, if Java is not prefered.

Java is dying in the same way COBOL is dying - it’s widespread, and we’ll be using it for decades to come. Nobody is going to rip out their complex enterprise systems just because Rust is cooler than Java, or whatever.
