Istio Weaves ‘Future-Ready’ Service Mesh for AI

Istio announced three major updates at KubeCon + CloudNativeCon 2026 in Amsterdam: Ambient Multicluster (beta), which extends sidecar-less service mesh across multiple clusters for unified security and traffic management; Gateway API Inference Extension (beta), which standardizes AI traffic management on Kubernetes; and experimental agentgateway support, an AI-native proxy for securing and observing communication between AI agents, tools, and models. These updates are driven by CNCF survey data showing 66% of organizations run generative AI workloads on Kubernetes, yet only 7% achieve daily AI deployment velocity. The releases aim to simplify multicluster operations and position Istio as the service mesh for agentic and AI-driven workloads.
