Vertex Pharmaceuticals has released suzetrigine, a new class of pain drug that targets the NAV1.8 sodium channel — found exclusively on pain-sensing nerves, not in the brain or heart. Unlike opioids or traditional pain relievers that broadly suppress the nervous system, this drug locks the NAV1.8 channel closed, preventing the electrical signal that transmits pain from ever forming. It is being described as the first true alternative to opioids in decades, with no addiction potential or psychoactive effects.
